  • Oil Paintings on Display at ML (website)

An exhibition of oil paintings by Linda Armantrout is on display in Gallery I of NCAR's Mesa Lab November 2 through November 28. In this exhibition, the artist depicts the moving horse as a metaphorical being. She manipulates line to make energy visible and manipulates color to make emotions visible. Her artistic process includes meditation, sketching, drawing, and color squares. Art galleries are open to the public weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and weekends/holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • EOL/MMM Seminar: Greenland Ice Sheet and Dynamic Response to Global Warming

Konrad Steffen Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), University of Colorado Boulder, CO The ice loss in Greenland shows acceleration during the last decade. The latest assessment of ice loss by the GRACE satellite shows a continued ice loss from the Greenland ice sheet and even acceleration in the last few years. Air temperatures on the Greenland ice sheet have increased by 4 deg. C since 1991. The ice sheet melt area increased by 30% for the western part between 1979-2008, with record melt years in 1987, 1991, 1998, 2002, 2005, and 2007. The increasing trend in the total area of melting bare ice is unmistakable at 13% per year. Hence, the bare ice region, the wet snow region, and the equilibrium line altitude have moved further inland and resulting in increased melt water flux towards the coast. Warm and extended air temperatures are to blame for 3.5 m water equivalent surface lowering at the long-term equilibrium line altitude, (1100 m elevation at 70 deg. N) between 2000 and 2007. Increase in ice velocity in the ablation region and the concurrent increase in melt water suggests that water penetrates to great depth through moulins and cracks, lubricating the bottom of the ice sheet. New insight was gained of subsurface hydrologic channels and cavities using new instrumentation and a video system during the melt peak in August 2007. Volume and geometry of a 100 m deep moulin were mapped with a rotating laser, and photographs with digital cameras. • ML Special Exhibit: Visualizing Climate Change

NCAR and EcoArts Connections Present Visualizing Climate Change: The Work of GHG Photos September 17, 2009 - December 31, 2009 Named after the scientific shorthand for “greenhouse gases” the photographers of GHG Photos have traveled the world to document the causes and effects, as well as the attempts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate. Visualizing Climate Change brings together the work of the handful of photographers who have dedicated the last couple years of their life to illustrating the changing climate. The images capture a range of subjects including forest fires, floods, glacial retreat, sea level rise, arctic habitat loss, and a myriad of other effects the world is experiencing. The show was designed by GHG Photos with the Henry Gregg Gallery and premiered at the NY Photo Festival. It features the work of Gary Braasch, Ashley Cooper, Benjamin Drummond, Peter Essick, Steve Kazlowski, and Joshua Wolfe.
