NSA Executive Committee Meeting: 13 October 2006 The following agenda items were discussed at this meeting: (1) NCAR Opportunity Fund: Morris Weismann reported on the procedure used to select this year's winners of the Opportunity Fund awards. A summary report was also provided to the EC by Jeff Anderson, co-chair of the Op. Fund Review Panel. A copy of the report is posted with these minutes on this website. (2) New NCAR Science Advisor: The e-mail request for candidates for the S.A. position currently held by Piotr Smolarkiewicz produced no responses. It was agreed that the EC chairs, R. Katz and R. Garcia, will attempt to recruit actively some suitable candidates. Several names were suggested as potential candidates. (3) Rotation of EC co-chairs: Rick Katz announced his intention to step down as EC co-chair and retire from the EC. Rick suggested Tom Horst (EC member from EOL) as a possible new co-chair; Rick will also work on recruiting someone to succeed him as representative from ISSE on the EC. R. Garcia agreed to continue as EC co-chair for at least six months; he will also work on finding a replacement for his position, so he can also retire from the NSA in 2007. (4) Report from the current Science Advisor: Piotr Smolarkiewicz presented an oral report of his activities as Science Advisor, and his involvement in various management activities, such as the new ABR, the NSF review of NCAR management, and the Petascale Computing Workshop. Piotr will submit a final written report for posting on this site.
